Two Level 1 16 Guidelines workshops happened this fall in Ontario, Canada - one offered through the Centre for Compassion and Wisdom in the Hamilton/Burlington, Ontario area, the other at the Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic in Ottawa, Ontario.
The workshop attracted sixteen participants and was facilitated by Craig Mackie and Sharon Babineau, with support from Elizabeth Skronski. The two-day training had a range of participants, from mental health professionals to educators, doctors, and even one member of the Canadian Military! From a facilitator’s perspective it was a watershed moment in terms of where participants came from - some had heard of the workshop through the University of Toronto AMM-Mind program, while others heard about it through the Centre for Compassion and Wisdom newsletter, and still others from local mindfulness networks. Many thanks to Dr. Ken Burgess for linking us up with Mindfulness Hamilton and providing the space for the event! Many of the participants are now interested in participating in the BoB (Building on the Basics) course, supported by Elizabeth Skronski. Most participants wish to incorporate a 16G card a day or one Guideline a week as initial personal practice. And one participant has started to use them to debrief with nursing students once a week and has remarked many times at what an impact the 16G have had, opening people up and connecting them deeply with their work and relationships.
Craig Mackie facilitated the course in collaboration with the Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic. Twelve participants gathered for the weekend course that was transformative and a wonderful way of connecting to a mindful practice. Participants included many educators and one school principal, as well as many mental health professionals. We hope to offer this workshop again in the next year in Ottawa, along with a BoB. Quotes from the workshop participants include: “Life change - one little step at a time.”; “If you want to be inspired and hopeful, take this course.”, and “This course had a huge impact on me. Using the Guidelines will change my relationships in a positive way.” The course offered one youth bursary place for free, which was greatly appreciated and had an energizing impact on the course as a whole.
