SUMMARY:Secular Spirituality\, The Science of Consciousness and the Illusion of Self
DESCRIPTION:⚠️ This event will be available live in 🇬🇧 English\, with translation into 🇪🇸 Spanish and 🇮🇹 Italian (registration links below). \n— \nJoin Geshe Tenzin Namdak\, Thomas Metzinger and Scott Snibbe for a profound dialogue on Secular Spirituality\, The Science of Consciousness\, and the Illusion of Self. This online event\, hosted by Science & Wisdom LIVE\, in partnership with FDCW and several other partners (below)\, will explore the intersections between Buddhist philosophy and secular spirituality\, focusing on key themes like consciousness\, selfhood\, and the potential for spiritual growth without religious belief. \nDrawing on Metzinger’s philosophical work on the science of consciousness and Geshe Namdak’s deep understanding of Buddhist mind science\, they will engage with the challenging concept of “no-self” and discuss how modern science and ancient wisdom can together reshape our understanding of spirituality in the 21st century. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity to reflect on whether spiritual practices can thrive outside traditional religious contexts and how both secular and contemplative traditions provide insights into consciousness and personal transformation. Perfect for those interested in philosophy\, Buddhism\, and the evolving nature of spirituality in today’s world. \nAbout the Topics\nSecular spirituality offers a path to personal transformation without relying on religious belief\, encouraging inner growth through practices like mindfulness and contemplation. The science of consciousness explores how subjective experience arises from the brain\, bridging the gap between philosophy and neuroscience. Meanwhile\, the illusion of self\, a central theme in both Buddhist philosophy and modern cognitive science\, challenges our deeply held notion of a fixed identity. Together\, these ideas invite us to re-examine who we are and how we relate to the world\, offering profound insights into both spiritual and scientific inquiries. \nAbout the Speakers\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak \nInitially an environmental researcher with a degree in hydrology from Van Hall Larenstein University\, Geshe Namdak began studying Buddhism in 1993 and was ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He completed the 20-year Geshe program at Sera Jey Monastic University in 2017\, followed by a year of Vajrayana studies at Gyume Tantric College in 2019\, the first Westerner to do so. With a strong interest in science\, he has organised various dialogues on contemporary science and ancient contemplative wisdom of the mind. Currently\, he is the resident teacher at Jamyang Buddhist Centre\, London\, and teaches worldwide. His latest book\, “Freedom Through Correct Knowing“\, explores the path to liberation through understanding reality as it truly is. \nProf. Thomas Metzinger \nThomas Metzinger is a distinguished philosopher and cognitive scientist\, renowned for his work in consciousness studies. Formerly a Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz\, Metzinger has led prominent academic and research organisations\, including the German Cognitive Science Society and the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness. His widely acclaimed books\, such as The Elephant and the Blind and The Ego Tunnel\, explore the nature of self and mind. Metzinger is also a member of the European Commission’s Expert Group on AI ethics and the president of the Barbara Wengeler Foundation. \nYou can learn more about Thomas and access lots of his work for free on his website: thomasmetzinger.com\, where you will find an open-access version of his book The Elephant and the Blind\, which we recommend reading in preparation for the talk! \nScott Snibbe \nScott Snibbe is the Executive Director of A Skeptic’s Path to Enlightenment\, a nonprofit organization\, author of How to Train a Happy Mind and podcast host\, dedicated to teaching secular forms of analytical meditation. Snibbe is a longtime student of Tibetan Buddhism whose teachers include Geshe Ngawang Dakpa\, Choden Rinpoche\, Ven. Rene Feusi\, Lama Zopa Rinpoche\, Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa\, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Inspired by his teachers\, he leads meditations that infuse the pure lineage of the great Buddhist masters with science\, humour\, and the realities of the modern world. \nPartners\nThis event is organised by Science & Wisdom LIVE in partnership with Jamyang London Buddhist Centre\, Foundation for Developing Compassion and Wisdom (FDCW)\, Nagarjuna Madrid\, Instituto Lama Tsongkhapa (ILTK) and Mind Science Academy (MSA). \nRegistration\nThis event is open to all on donation\, and registration is required. SUMMARY:16 Guidelines-Second retreat weekend for a happier and more meaningful life | Organized by Chenrezig Institute
DESCRIPTION:About the Sessions\nJoin Peter Shepherd for the second of the in person immersive weekends at The Chenrezig Institute Wellbeing Centre to explore the 16 Guidelines in a retreat setting\,  you are welcome to attend the entire retreat\, join for a day or even one session! \nThese 16 guided meditations and discussions will take place over two immersive retreat weekends\, this will facilitate both an intellectual understanding and personal experience\, to act as a launching pad for you to bring them into your daily life. \nA Little bit of Background\nThe 16 guidelines are for everyone who would like to experience greater wellbeing\, ease\, contentment\, meaning\, fulfilment\, connection and joy. Each guideline is based on a positive quality. \nDiscoveries in neuroscience have shown that we have the potential to develop and transform our minds in a positive way. Practising these Guidelines can help strengthen our existing qualities and deepen our connection with others for a more meaningful and happier life. \nThe aim of the 16 Guidelines is to help people create long-term happiness and fulfilment for themselves and others. Each guideline represents a universal value or attitude which is rooted in the foundations of compassion and wisdom.  \nThe 16 guidelines are a contemporary presentation of ancient wisdom\, originating from the 7th-century King Songtsen Gampo from Tibet. They are a practical yet profound framework with which to orientate ourselves and our actions in the world. \nThere are precise causes of happiness and the 16 Guidelines is a powerful yet simple way for us to create these causes without needing to be associated with any particular belief or spiritual tradition. \n“Watch your thoughts\, they become your words; \nwatch your words\, they become your actions; \nwatch your actions\, they become your habits; \nwatch your habits\, they become your character; \nwatch your character\, it becomes your destiny.” \n– Lao Tzu \nBookings and Cost:\n\n\n\nThe recommended contribution is $120 but you are welcome to pay whatever you are comfortable with. Your contributions of $30\, $60 or $120 will all be very helpful allowing the Institute to continue to offer activities and courses at the center and online. \nFor more information and bookings please visit the Chenrezig Institute  website \n\n\n\nWhy meditate?\nWhen you control your mind with wisdom you create the space you need to discover peace and joy. Your life then becomes peaceful and joyful and somewhat protected from the ups and downs of the external world. For beginner to advanced meditators. \nFacilitator\nPeter Shepherd: Peter has attended numerous study and meditation retreats at Chenrezig Institute and other locations. He currently lives in Caloundra with his partner and work as a Zenthai Shiatsu therapist. His study of Zenthai Shiatsu\, Chinese Five Element Theory and Ayurveda have led him to explore the body-mind relationship in greater depth and he is passionate about how other traditions and modalities can support Buddhist practice.

SUMMARY:Parenting with Compassion & Wisdom | Open Sessions With Pam Cayton
DESCRIPTION:This series of 4 classes leads us along a journey of reflection\, discussion\, and practical application for our everyday lives as parents. \nWe follow the framework developed over 35 years at Tara Redwood School\, the model school for Creating Compassionate Cultures. It is a secular program based on ancient wisdom and contemporary science and was inspired by Lama Thubten Yeshe\, who talked about his concept of Universal Education. \nSaturday sessions Open to everyone! \nOverview : \nClass One:Parent as Guide and Role Model:Through reflection\, we connect with aspects of our lives that have influenced our parenting styles. What do we want to strengthen and what would we like to change We explore the question\, what do I really want\, what are our deepest wishes for our home\, ourselves\, and our children? \nClass TwoCreating Our Dreams:We explore practical and constructive ways to guide our children and nurture what we really want for our children and family. Through understanding the nature of all things as interconnected and in the nature of change\, we find we have infinite possibilities to achieve our dreams. \nClass Three:Our journey continues as we explore the psychology of ourselves as parents. We explore how emotion is triggered and how we can start to change emotional triggers. We learn about practical tools to help our children develop skills for transforming their emotions. \nClass Four: \nWe now expand our deeper understanding to include others in our families\, communities\, and the world. What we have discovered together and integrated into our home has been nurturing empathy and compassion. We look at ways to empower and engage in compassion in action. \nThis program is for everyone\, no background or experience in Buddhism is required. You can drop into the classes as it suits your schedule or come to all of them. \n\nWHEN: on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm ( PDT)\nWHERE: Online and in person\nFACILITATOR: Pam Cayton\nMORE INFORMATION AND BOOKINGS: please check the Land of Medicine Buddha events page\n\nMeet the Facilitator:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPam Cayton lived in Nepal from 1978-88 where she studied Buddhism\, taught English and helped organize courses in Buddhist philosophy and meditation.
