SUMMARY:Make your Mind an Ocean With Karuna Cayton | Open Sessions
DESCRIPTION:“When you change your mind\, you change your world.”— Lama Thubten Yeshe \nAbout the course:\nLama Thubten Yeshe had a profound and unique way of presenting traditional Buddhist teachings in a modern and universal style. We will explore and investigate Lama’s approach as expressed in his small book Make Your Mind an Ocean. \nThis next three-week series invites participants to explore the vast potential of the mind through the cultivation of wisdom\, compassion\, and inner spaciousness. New participants are warmly welcome\, and those continuing from the previous series will find rich new material to deepen their understanding and practice. \nLed by Karuna Cayton—a psychotherapist and longtime student of Lama Yeshe—this course offers practical guidance for transforming everyday challenges into opportunities for growth. Through teachings\, discussion\, and guided meditation\, participants will learn how Buddhist psychology helps dissolve mental turbulence and uncover the natural clarity\, joy\, and peace within. \nThis course is ideal for anyone seeking a deeper\, kinder relationship with their mind and emotions\, Karuna draws on decades of therapeutic experience and deep immersion in Lama Yeshe’s teachings to present an accessible\, grounded path toward emotional balance and insight. \nThis program is for everyone\, no background or experience in Buddhism is required. You can drop into the classes as it suits your schedule or come to all of them. \n\nWHEN: on Saturdays March 14\, 21\, 28 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm ( PDT)\nWHERE: Online and in person\nFACILITATOR: Karuna Cayton\nMORE INFORMATION AND BOOKINGS: please check the Land of Medicine Buddha events page\n\nMeet the Facilitator:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaruna Cayton acquired a Masters in Clinical Psychology in 1992.  He is a licensed Psychotherapist having trained at the Children’s Health Council in Palo Alto\, California. \nFrom 1975 to 1988 he lived at Kopan Monastery studying Buddhist psychology and philosophy under the guidance of Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. There\, he established a western studies program for the monks.  \nHe is the principal at The Karuna Group\, a project engaged in interpreting Buddhist psychological theory and interventions for modern people. \nHe is the author of The Misleading Mind: How We Create Our Own Problems and How Buddhist Psychology Can Help Us Solve Them (2012).

Drawing from an ancient wisdom tradition\, the 16 Guidelines proposes a palette of secular options that cultivate states of the embodied mind.  These guidelines can be integrated into everyday life as a secular practice to optimize one’s human potential as well as to promote a civil society. These include states of mind such as: compassion\, kindness\, authentic speech etc. \nWhat you’ll learn:\n\nUnderstand the concept of the embodied mind.\nInterpret the ancient document known as the 16 Guidelines both historically and in its contemporary application and usage.\nDevelop your own personal guidelines that will provide the scaffolding of your own embodied practice.\n\nSchedule:\nThis course is delivered online on Mondays in 4 online sessions from March 9\, 2026 – March 30\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:About this session:\nA freely offered online event\, with a settling meditation and a complete practice from the program TMM. All you need is a few colored pencils and some paper. Group sharing is optional. \nMore information:\n\n\nThis session is offered online on the 21st January\, from 5pm to 6:15 pm \nContact email: hilary.educationuniverselle@gmail.com \nFacilitator: Hilary McMichael\nBorn English but Mediterranean at heart\, I have been involved in Universal Education programs since 2009\, first as a translator for teachers from Anglo-Saxon countries\, then as a trainer. I now facilitate the 16 Attitudes and Transformative Mindfulness Methods\, as well as a program on compassion. \nI am also a qualified trainer to teach Jon Kabat-Zinn’s MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) cycle. Fortunately\, due the kindness of his teachers and great good karma\, after his children finished school\, Gönpo was able to fulfil the long-held dream of becoming a monk\, albeit without the kung fu. Ending a 20-year career as a high school teacher of languages\, he become a wandering monk spending time studying and meditating in Europe\, India and Nepal before returning to his hometown\, Brisbane\, to take up the role of Spiritual Care Practitioner at Karuna Hospice Services\, giving care and support to people with life limiting illnesses and their families. \nIn his time as a school teacher\, it was the feedback from students around mindfulness practices and life lessons that had the biggest impact on Gönpo\, motivating him to become a 16 Guidelines for a Happy Life facilitator. In his sessions\, Gönpo encourages discussion and deep engagement in the topics\, challenging participants to examine their own ways of thinking. Through understanding how we are now\, we are better equipped to develop the habits that will bring us closer to how we want to be\, interacting with our own minds and the people around us in ways that will make us and the communities we live in\, happier and healthier. \nMore info\nFor more information and to register please visit the Maitreya Institute website
